A fragrance inspired by Myanmar, and by the love of friends and family; lovers and significant others.

Created by perfumer Frank Voelkl.

Our Story

Our Story

“In 1994, just as I was starting out as a journalist, I visited Myanmar. My mission was to reconnect with my mother’s family, after a separation of over 50 years. My relatives were over the moon to be back in touch, as was I. Something about them, something about this country, got under the skin of this otherwise very traditionally “English” girl, and over time, an idea formed to create a beauty brand that infused the magic, joy and other inspiring ingredients from a country that was quite literally, in my blood, with all the many years of my experience writing about beauty. La Pyae Apothecary is the result, capturing all the knowledge I’ve gleaned and the lessons I’ve learned, incorporating the latest in technology and well-crafted formulations, while also shining a light on a part of the world that is so beautiful, but often forgotten. La Pyae, pronounced “La Pea-yay” means “full moon” in Burmese, and happens to be the nick-name of one of my relatives.

And now here we are, with our first fragrance, created by the perfumer Frank Voelkl, and inspired by Myanmar.

We would love you to join us as we create magical, joyful, inspiring products that will instil joy as you go about your day.”

Postcard from Ngwe Saung Beach, 2014

Walking down the beach that evening, there is laughter in the air. My cousins stop every few feet to take yet more selfies of our family group. A motorbike whizzes past, back and forth along the water’s edge. There’s a man on a horse, looking like a cowboy, Myanmar-style. Women chat together as the sun sets, the waves lap at the hem of their longyis. Plastic stools in bright primary colours are scattered on the sand next to driftwood stalls doing a brisk trade in packets of biscuits, tea, fried fish, betel nut. A child points to a cluster of kittens, beaming with joy. We amble like this, taking it all in, past a statue of a mermaid, her paint chipped as she lures sailors to the rocks.

I wear Catch Me If I Fall like an amulet. I breathe it in, and bergamot, cardamom and neroli and green leaves sparkle in their freshness; a little deeper and a rush of jasmine sambac, ambrette, freesia, and iris transport me to golden hour; a hug of cedarwood, sandalwood, and white musk is grounding, pure and calming.

Sustainability

Sustainability

We work with one of the most ethical perfume houses in the world to ensure  our natural and synthetic ingredients are both safe and sustainable. While our fragrance is inspired by Myanmar, none of our ingredients come from there, due to the current instability. Our cardamom comes from Guatemala, our bergamot from Italy, our sandalwood from Australia. Our cedarwood is upcycled from shavings, a by-product from those used in the lumber industry so that no trees are felled purely for the essential oil.

Other ingredient/packaging notes:
Organic alcohol. Vegan. Not tested on animals. Paraben and Phthalate free. International Fragrance Research Association (IFRA). Recyclable glass. Plastic-free caps are fully compostable, made by Shellworks. FSC certified paper.

Partnerships

We aren't able to produce or manufacture anything in Myanmar at the moment, but in time we hope to work with key crafts organisations to collaborate on special projects.

We will be working with three charities:

Prospect Burma, a charity Kathleen’s mother was involved with for many years, which works with marginalised young people in Myanmar, whose education and potential is being blocked by armed conflict.

Medical Action Myanmar, aims to improve access to quality health care in Myanmar, targeting poor, marginalised and vulnerable people.

Burma Skincare Initiative, brings together leading British and Burmese dermatologists to those in Myanmar in need of dedicated skincare expertise, via remote access, empowering communities and driving systemic improvements in healthcare delivery.
